Well. There's reading. I would like to do more of that. I've had enough time and yet I never seem to finish a story. [ A pause. ] Speaking to others more frequently. [ Yet another pause, a frustrated sigh. ] And a more...'normal' schedule, that is, to be awake during the day rather than at night. [ Some radio silence and then the device shuts off. ]

I didn't think I could get sick. Though I suppose if I've bones to break then a cold shouldn't be out of the question.

Every world, small enough to fit into the palms of our hands. I think if someone had given me this when I first arrived I wouldn't have believed it possible.

Now it seems unwise to risk that it isn't.

[Closely listening viewers may detect singing -- not Yvaine, but ones like her. It should sound as if it is locked in each individual's head, straight through to his or her heart, and anyone who focuses with particular steadfastness may get the feeling of being removed from where they are -- a pleasant, calming, freeing sentiment that encompasses that person until there is the interrupting sound of the device being moved, breaking that entrancement.]

In a way, even with the responsibility, it would be nice if we could keep them.

Oh lovely.

[ a sigh and a mutter about not having seen that ridiculous goat or whatever it was from before, at least ]

I don't suppose any of you wandering around have a Babylon Candle on you.

[ look, she's not above inquiring at this point, and it'd be foolish to miss the chance, so... there you have it. ]

I wonder if it means anything -- that in one world a star is nothing but a distant fire, while in another stars no longer even exist, and in yet another stars look like what most know to be humans, give or take a brighter or dimmer glow. They converse, sing even, and they watch history as far-away witnesses who need not write any of it down because it is our post to remember, remember when perhaps nobody else will.

We are immortal. But fires...they go out eventually. Does it matter if that's all that they are?

Time moves so slowly here.

Does one world's version have any connection to the other's?

I would guess not, but guessing leaves a lot to be desired.

It's getting cold. I ought to look into...shelter.

But...

[ The device catches her only from the back, and Yvaine doesn't appear to have aged at all, but in her time it has been decades, over a century in fact. The crown on her head is the most obvious mark of difference, and a glow about her emphasized by the late hour. ]

Well.

What an inopportune time to be magicked away. I had thought I'd arranged for precautions against this.

[ When she turns and walks toward the device her foot knocks it over and turns it off, blanking the screen first as the sound of her picking it up follows, the click of the audio switching off as well. ]

Fortunate, I suppose, to not have to drink or eat anything---particularly drink today. In the past this type of curse seems to happen on days meant for a celebration of sorts.

I have no idea what today's reason for festivity was supposed to be.

Of course, maybe there wasn't one this time at all.

[ a muted sigh and a pause both go here ]

Anyway, I was wondering, for those of you that are sober... Stands to reason that out of all the people here a fair number will be. ...what jobs do you keep here? It seems that a fair few go into work close to what they do in their original worlds, but surely some of you must branch out into other...things.

Or, at least, that is what I'm trying to figure out right now yes or no, really.

Even I don't care for the idea of winter outside. I've always been far enough away for it to be a non-issue.

And last year I lived with---

This will pass just like everything else here, I imagine.

I hope.

Whatever compelled me to board originally seems to be gone.

Still, I doubt that having a similar hair color was enough to be considered a pair.

Those who have remained behind, consider at least getting higher than ground level....the top floor ideally--it's not a ship, but it seems better than being trapped in a room with the water rising. You might have to secure yourself to---are there even holdings? Suppose there is---

An umbrella is useless if you were to go to the very top. What else though? Inside lower than half I would guess is a prison and the top floors won't hold everyone who has stayed, but the outside sounds like an impossible gale.

Does lightning strike here? A stupid question...

This place isn't Earth or Stormhold or a derivative of. It's not unwise to consider every possibility....
I have seen great floods and other disasters. They never last for one, and for another---well even if they did everything here is of a temporary nature. Maybe it will be over tomorrow.

[ a pause and there is the veryyyy audible noise of lots of pairs on board ]

Maybe not. I never tried to predict things before. But then they never affected me.

And I have never cared about....

At least try.

And perhaps count yourself lucky that you aren't on this ship after all.

The smell is lovely.

[ sarcasm....clearly. ]

They must be bored.

[ And then there is a pause again....as she wonders what is going on in the City proper...but then she shuts it off because there doesn't seem to be anything else to say, and even what she has said feels largely useless. People will do what they want to do. That hasn't changed in...well, ever.

But she cares about some, personally even for the first time in...well... also ever.

She's new to wanting to tell Someone or rather Someones that she cares, so she talks to a general Anyone, which seems safer if on the face of it rather foolish. ]

Well. Did you think I would forget? A year today, Tristan Thorn, that's when you---

I guess it doesn't very much make a difference at this point, but---

...

Has anyone here heard of a Babylon Candle?

And supposing that you have, do you know where I might find one?

[ pause ]

I would be grateful for any information on the matter.

I don't know why it didn't occur to me before. I ruled it out perhaps. Foolish.

It has nearly been a year now.

Do you even know----

No, I don't suppose you do. Why would you?

They say we don't remember, as it is.

Strange, but that seems normal here, of course.

[ a long pause, as if she's done speaking... ]

Neil, thank you for the walk. I meant to say that before.

I hope the day hasn't been too difficult for you and your friends.
